(DAYTONA BEACH, FL) The dawn of a new season begins with the warm Florida sun rising up over the Atlantic Ocean and pristine beaches of Eastern Florida. Sixty years ago cars raced on that same beach, before moving inland to the great 2.5 mile high banked superspeedway of Daytona International Speedway.
25 teams rolled into Daytona International Speedway for the 24 positions on the starting grid. Landon Sciacca failed to qualify after missing the drivers meeting. Greg Evans led the field in qualifying with a lap of 48.567 seconds. Evans was joined by Dan Murray on the front row for the green flag.
When it came time for the green flag, 24 drivers took the green flag and sped around the 2.5 mile superspeedway. As the field jockeyed for position, the racing was double file and then streamlined to single file before the first casualty of the night, the #81 of Tim Johnston lost his engine on lap eight. No caution flew as Johnston quickly pulled out of the racing groove.
Racing continued green and fuel strategy was beginning to become the topic of radio transmissions between pit crews and drivers as the trucks were roughly eight laps short on fuel. A much needed caution flew on lap 31 as Dave Spotton and Jeff Dillon made contact after a stack up on the inside line. Dillon went spinning and Spotton was damaged beyond repair. The entire field pitted, with 21 trucks on the track pit road was a busy place.
When racing continued it didn’t take long for the tandem of Greg Evans and Dan Murray to get back out front. Murray led a race high 22 laps. The racing got back to two wide and at times three wide before Steve Buhala and Jerry Bulman made contact with two laps to go and went spinning through the infield grass. No caution flew as both drivers were able to drive their trucks back to the pits after the incident. Murray continued to lead with Evans in tow, Andy Warren led a charge and challenged while Ty Hester led the high line around. Nobody had anything for the Murray/Evans tandem as Dan Murray won the NextEra Energy Resources 125, Evans was second followed by rookie Adam Jurski in third, Andy Warren and Hester rounded out the top five.
Fifteen drivers finished on the lead lap, while 20 drivers were listed as running at the end of 125 miles. By far the excitement and competition levels are way up at ASRS, the race saw eight lead changes among seven drivers. The ASRS Camping World Truck Series is back on track March 27th at Martinsville Speedway. During that time, ASRS will be sanctioning ASRS Open Wheel Series racing on Tuesday nights.

For the ASRS Camping World Truck Series, everything is new for 2012. New trucks, new rules package, and a new attitude. With everything new, the 2012 ASRS Shootout at Daytona International Speedway was the perfect race to test the new equipment, while still not worried about points.
Greg Evans put his #2 truck on the pole for the 20 lap, only .02 of a second ahead of second place qualifier Jeff Dillon, aboard the #52.
The race got off to a fast and furious start with Dillon getting hooked up to Jerry Bulman’s 36 trucks to lead the opening laps. One of the issues of the package was quickly realized when Dillon’s machine overheated from pushing the #36 for only a few laps and he uncorked the engine on lap 5, ending his night.
At that point the tandem of Greg Evans, and Dan Murray took over the lead until lap 9, when Bulman picked up the #41 Dave Spotton as a drafting partner and Spotton took over the lead.
The next few laps were spent, with drivers jockeying for position to the final run to the win. Murray, getting assistance from the pole sitting Evans took over the lead on lap 17, and never looked back. Coming to the finish line, with Murray and Evans hooked up, the rest of the field battled just behind. Ty Hester and Dave Spotton made contact that set off a crash coming to the finish line, the crash collected the remaining five drivers and jumbled the finishing order as Jim Foose was hit and sent spinning into the grass along with Hester, Bulman and Eric Bannenberg weren't as lucky as their trucks were destroyed just short of the finish line.
Dan Murray took the Shootout win, his first shootout win in the ASRS Shootout. Greg Evans finished second, followed by Jim Foose in third, Ty Hester finished fourth and Dave Spotton rounded out the top 5.
Next week, the ASRS camping world Truck Series returns to the Daytona International Speedway for the seasoning opening NextEra Energy Resources 125. A field of over 30 trucks is entered for the 24 starting positions, making getting into the race, just as tough as the race itself.
